Alqueva Dam

The Alqueva Dam was inaugurated in 2002, it is the largest dam in Western Europe, located on the Guadiana River, in Alentejo, Portugal, near the border with Spain. Occupying an area of 250 km², 33 of which are in the province of Badajoz. Its storage capacity is 4,150 hm³ of water (an amount equivalent to the water supply needs of Lisbon for 40 years). The length, from the dam to the tail end of the reservoir, is 83 km. Its maximum depth is 152 m. Its rugged coast has a length of 1160 km, equivalent to the total length of the Portuguese coastline. The height of the dam is 96 m, 458 m long and approximately 7 m wide.
